“THE BEE,” PROJECT LEARN

UMASS LOWELL, UNIVERSITY CROSSING

This mural was in partnership with “Project Learn” and “Art Up Lowell.” I was selected to collaborate with an old friend and colleague, Adam O’Day. This was an incredible opportunity to explore our skill set in large format. We had collaborated on many paintings before but never on a large-scale mural.

Working with Adam has always been enjoyable. I have a lot of respect for his approach to composition. Adam and I always learn from each other, and the energy we felt while painting this mural was unmatched.

Thanks to Ellen Casazza, Autumn, Art Up Lowell, Project Learn, and the University of Massachusetts (Lowell).

The Lowell Sun

“Mural artists inspire Lowell High and UML students, future of city’s creative economy”

Over the course of one week in October, Ortiz and O’Day transformed a 42-foot wall at UMass Lowell’s University Crossing on Merrimack Street into a vivid celebration of nature and creativity. “The Bee” is the latest installation in a series of murals as part of Project LEARN’s ArtUp Lowell, a youth art and creative placemaking initiative that celebrates the city’s diverse multicultural communities.
